Project title: Quality Assessment for Material Appearance
Project description: Evaluation of Material Appearance Quality (MAQ) and its exact reproduction via various media is an extremely challenging field in both research academia and industry. Moreover, quality assessment for material appearance has two important sides: one belongs to quality control and another is information security (i.e. what information the material appearance may conceal, whether it is dangerous or not). Quality side assesses whether the reproduced material quality is on the same level as original material whereas information security side investigates whether there are hidden data. That information which might be hidden in material can be some type of cue or signal or barcode which, when measuring, may affect the performance of media devices and distribute viruses and other threats, and make whole system vulnerable.
Currently, there is no metric that takes into account many parameters upon judging the MAQ and which behaves almost as Human Visual System (HVS) specifically for 2.5D prints.
Therefore, we aim to propose new meaningful objective metric(s) by modelling and incorporating HVS for estimating and assessing material appearance via established and/or proposed guidelines and protocols for subjective and objective evaluation of material reproduction.
Our research question is how well 2.5D printed images represent objects they depict. In order to achieve our project goals, we will do deep literature survey, conduct psychophysical experiments and model HVS, will apply various relevant state of art data analysis and data visualization techniques.
In conclusion, the output of this project will bring novel standardized guidelines and metric(s) for material quality evaluation. Even though information security part is not in the first place in this project goal (can be extended as future work), I am eager to keep in mind about data security side during the project and attend seminars and conferences in order to be informed with up to date knowledge regarding information security.
